In game 6 of the series SOS @ SPR, Serenity starter Gil Meche didn't allow a hit through four innings. He then walked the bases loaded with two out in the fifth, and that left him fatigued, so I brought in Brad Thompson. Boy that felt weird- yanking a starter who had a no-hitter going, before he even qualified for the win.
Anyway, SOS remained hitless against the Springfield bullpen until Aaron Guiel hit a pinch infield single off Trevor Hoffman with two out and two on in the ninth. Hoffman then achieved a great anticlimax when he retired Jim Edmonds with the bases loaded to preserve a 3-0, one hit shutout.
Well, this should erase any lingering doubt out there about whether SOS had slipped from their dominant 2005 season...dominant in the regular season that is. Gil Meche? That's awfully weak. What Kevin doesn't even mention is that Meche also pitched well in game 1 of that series and SOS lost that one also. He may not have picked up a win either time though. Oh well, I guess that even a blind squirrel will stumble across a nice acorn every once in a while.
Despite the obvious slippage, SOS remains in the playoff hunt...and probably will until they have to finish the season with 14 games against the mighty Buda Pests.
