Rooker started his series off right homering in his 1st at bat, this would be the first home run of many for EGR. A couple innings later a Matsui meltdown, also a theme in the series, ended with a Chapman grand slam off a freshly entered Diaz. HAR would answer with 1 run in the 3rd on a Taveras walk and Correa double but that would be all the scoring for HAR. A Chapman HBP and Mullins HR in the 6th would pad the lead. EGR 7-1
G2 - Gil vs Taillon
This one got out of hand early as well. Taillon wouldn't make it out of the 1st, another theme this series, allowing back to back singles to Castro and Rooker, then the smart manager called IBB to Larnach, followed by a Chapman GO scoring a run then singles to Perez and Mullins before he would be pulled after giving up 3 runs. HAR got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a Freeman single and Yelich double. EGR would answer with 3 more runs on a Rocchio single, Castro walk, and Rooker home run. EGR added another run in the 4th. HAR put up 2 in the 5th and 1 in the 8th on Yelich HR to bring the game to within 3. EGR would get an uneeded insurance run in the 9th. EGR 8-4
G3 - Francis vs Bibee
A Freeman double and Yelich single would actually get HAR on the board first, but EGR answered right back on a Rooker triple and Castellanos home run. HAR retook the lead in the 4th on a Yelich single, a Castro error to put Lindor on and a Diaz double plating 2. EGR tied in the 5th on a Chapman SF. A Lindor HR in the 6th gave the lead back to HAR and they never gave it up, adding 2 runs in the 7th on a Tavares single and Burger HR. HAR 6-3
G4 - Peterson vs Crawford
A very uneventful game, Crawford went 8 strong giving up no runs. Chapman and Perez had home runs in this game. Looking like it might be another early exit for HAR. EGR 7-0
G5 - Hanifee vs Ober
EGR would put up a run in the 2nd on a Perez single, Mullins walk, and Rojas single. HAR tied it in the 5th on a Diaz double, Altuve bunt, and a passed ball (another theme about to play a big part in this series). HAR would take the lead in the 8th on a Harper HBP, Taveras GO moving Harper to 2nd, Correa fly out moving Harper to 3rd....and you guessed it, a passed ball scoring Harper. After entering the game in the 7th Clase was looking to close the game out in the 9th, only to have Mullins send a pitch deep into the cf seats tying the game (Rick would be proud as I'm pretty sure Mullins did this to me several times when he was on his team). Harper would say not so fast Mr. Mullins retaking the lead with a lead off HR vs Helsley and Yates would hold off EGR in the 10th taking the win. HAR 3-2
G6 Gil vs Taillon
Rooker was at it again, after Larnach walk he launched on into the seats giving EGR an early 2-0 lead, which means Taillon was at it again. Following it up with a HBP and single Taillon was gone from the game. HAR answered with a Correa single, Freeman walk, and Yelich HR giving HAR the 3-2 lead. After a bunch of relievers and a bunch of zeros Perez would tie it up in the 6th on a lead off HR. The score would stay tied until the bottom of the 9th. Diaz led off the inning getting on with an error by the 1st baseman Turner. A wild pitch moved Diaz to 2nd and Altuve bunt got him to 3rd. Burger was intentionally walked and Helsley was brought in to face Taveras and promptly struck him out, this brought Lindor to the plate with two outs. Lindor would walk it off lining a pitch up the middle to bring home the winning run and keep HAR's hopes alive. HAR 4-3
G7 Bibee vs Francis
EGR scored first on a (you guessed it) Mullins HR. Bibee was on fire throwing a no hitter into the 5th. With two outs in the 5th Chourio hit a triple to cf with a 1-15 roll for an inside the park homerun, Mullins made a great throw home (16), but somehow Chourio was able to beat Bailey blocking the plate (1 defense, with a 1 roll) to tie the game. It would be relief pitchers and zeros again until the bottom of the 9th. Alvarado came into the game and K'd Freeman then got Yelich to fly out. With Correa coming to the plate EGR went to Ginkel. Making up for his paltry offensive showing in the series Correa walked it off with a HR to cf sending HAR on to the next round. HAR 2-1
Definitely didn't expect to come back in this series down 3-1, and wouldn't have without the 5 passed balls by EGR. I have definitely been there and feel bad for Mike, he had a great team and managed a very good series. Bright side for Mike is Salem is already in the world series and has to be the odds on favorite to win. It was a very fun series, even if I hadn't come out on the winning side, lots of very tight games at the end.
Well, I thought this one might be happening after game 4, but without the early offensive output, it was just too hard to navigate Trav's usual legion of doom bullpen in the last three games. Congrats to him on yet another great team and a hard fought comeback.
The real lesson of this series for me was that you can't spell Patrick Bailey without PB :(
