I dont have the pbp for this one, but the first inning saw a 2 run HR by Jesus Aguliar matched in part by a solo shot from Andres Gimenez, then there was a lot of nothing until the 7th, when the QUA bats plated a run to bring it even. The top of the 8th saw pinch hitter Ezequiel Duran hit a decisive 2-out, 2-run single, which provided just enough cushion so that a 9th inning rally from QUA couldn't quite get it done. EGR 4, QUA 3
Game 2 Luzardo vs Ray
EGR loaded the bases in the 2nd and 4th innings, but only managed a single run in each frame on a HBP and a ground out, both by Willi Castro. Eloy Jiminez brought it back to 2-1 in the bottom of the 4th on a solo HR, but that proved to be the end of the scoring, as Ray and Kyle Finnegan worked out of 2-on, 1-out situations in the 5th and 9th, and the EGR bullpen only allowed 2 baserunners in total over the last 5 innings. EGR 2, QUA 1
Game 3 Gibson vs Detmers
EGR got off to a good start thanks to a 2-run Murphy HR in the 1st, and still held a 2-run advantage after the teams traded single runs in the 4th, but QUA tied it in the 5th on a walk-bunt-single-single-ground out sequence that chased Detmers. Lane Thomas got to 3rd with 1 out in the 7th but couldnt score, leaving the door open for a 3-run EGR 7th inning rally, kicked off by an Andrus error followed by a walk, a single, and a huge Castro double. Would it be enough? Four consecutive QUA runners reached off of 3 EGR relievers in the 8th, pulling it to 6-4 with the bases loaded and no outs, but Jose Alvarado came in and struck out ONeill, Thomas, and McGuire to end the threat. The 9th inning proved much less eventful. EGR 6, QUA 4
Game 4 Cabrera vs Suarez
No really good scoring chances until the bottom of the 6th when EGR gets a lead off single and a walk, but Kyle Finnegan comes in and strikes out 2 and gets a fly out to end the threat. QUA returns the favor in the 7th, with 2 lead-off singles followed by a sacrifice bunt and a strike out. Gimenez gets HBP to load the bases, but Jose Alvarado strikes out PH Max Kepler to keep it scoreless. With 2 outs in the top of the 8th, Mr. e4 Ramon Laureano commits 2-base errors on consecutive batters, followed by a Lane Thomas double, and thats all she wrote. QUA 2, EGR 0
Game 5 Webb vs Garcia
Not much again until the top of the 5th, when QUA loaded the bases with 2 outs (double, HBP, walk) and scored a run on a Miranda single, but Hosmer struck out to limit the damage. A Vogelbach HR in the 6th pushed it to 2-0, but EGR finally got some traffic in the bottom of the 6th, scoring 3 times on single-walk-SO-single-single+error-SF sequence. That proved to be enough as the EGR bullpen limited the QUA offense to a single in each of the 7th and 8th innings, and Montero got some big help in the 9th from Sean Murphy, who threw out Tyler ONeill trying to steal 2nd for the first out of the inning, which ended up really mattering given a 2-out single from McGuire that might have tied the game. Rafael Montero ended up with saves in all 4 EGR wins, as he proved to be a very useful in-season trade pick-up. EGR 3, QUA 2
So, despite a 4-1 EGR series victory, it was an extremely tight affair the whole way.Neither team did much offensively, as EGR only managed a 0.177/0.280/0.247 slash line and QUA a 0.193/0.272/0.317 line, with EGR winning the scoring battle 15-12. In the end it probably came down to EGR bumping their average with RISP to a whopping 0.220 (9-41), while QUA went 5 for 34 (0.147) in similar circumstances.
Congratulations to Dennis on a fine 99-win season that could very easily have been extended with just a little more luck in a few key situations.
