Game 1 (Carrasco vs Wacha): The EGR offense starts the series off in fine fashion, with the big blow in a 5-run 1st inning being a Seager grand slam.SFO leaves the bases loaded without scoring in the bottom of the inning, but makes up 2 of the runs on a Sogard HR in the 2nd and 2 more in the 4th with 4 singles and a force out.A Fowler HR in the 6th and back to back doubles in the 7th extend the EGR lead to 9-4.SFO loads the bases again in the 8th with 1 out, as Betances gives way to Hand, who induces a fly out that fails to score a run.Blackmon then walks to plate a run, but Hand gets a grounder to end the threat and pitches around a 1-out single in the 9th to put it to rest. EGR 9, SFO 5
Game 2 (Santana vs Paxton):More failed chances as EGR loads the bases in the 1st but fails to score, and SFO hits into a DP with runner at 1st and 2nd and no outs in the 2nd.The big inning comes in the 3rd, as EGR loads the bases with one out on 2 singles and a HBP. Santana and Beckham double in 2 runs each, and after a Fowler ground out, Seager hits another shot, adding 2 more runs.EGR tacks on 3 more in the 5th, with Crawford doubling in 2 of them. Ervin Santana does the classic scattering of baserunners, allowing 8 hits and 4 walks in a complete game, but never in a productive sequence.Blackmon and Lagares hit homers in the 6th and 8th but leading off, and that is all the scoring for SFO.EGR 9, SFO 2
Game 3 (Bundy vs Happ):Rizzo and Crawford solo shots in the 2nd and 3rd have us tied at 1 going into the 6th, when SFO retakes the lead on a walk, groundout, Story single combo. They add another small-ball run in the 8th on a walk-SB-Story single combo.Walks from 3 different SFO pitchers sandwiched around a fly out load the bases in the bottom of the 8th. Knebel strikes out Seager but a wild pitch plates 1 run before he induces a Nava ground out with the lead runner on 2nd.EGR goes down 1-2-3 in the 9th.SFO 3, EGR 2
Game 4 (Leake vs Carrasco): A theme continues to develop as SFO loads the bases in the top of the 1st but fails to score.Leake pitches reasonably well through 6 (8 hits, no walks), but pulls an anti-Santana, as a Seager leadoff HR, 4 straight singles, and a Springer double give EGR a 4-0 lead in the 2nd.Carrasco retires 12 straight after the rough 1st inning, and almost escapes runners on 1st and 2nd with no out in the 6th, but SFO breaks through on a 2-out Pham double to make it 4-2.Brad Hand gives up a 1-out walk and double in the 7th before yielding to Betances, who promptly walks Tomlinson to load the bases.Stop me if you have heard this before, but Ellsbury grounds into an inning-ending DP to end the threat. This is especially crucial as Leake and Claudio end up holding the EGR offense to 2 baserunners from the 3rd through the 8th innings.Betances gives up a 1-out single in the 8th, but Neshek comes in to get 5 straight outs.EGR 4, SFO 2
Game 5 (Wacha vs Santana): Santana isnt terrible but falls victim to sequencing himself but a walk-triple-WP- Nunez HR sequence gives SFO a 3-0 lead in the 3rd.EGR scores 1 in the 4th on 3 straight singles and another in the 6th (walk-WP-single) to pull within 1, but with 1 out and 2 on in the 7th, Ellsbury atones for failing to come through in game 4 by greeting new reliever Dellin Betances with a 3-run jack.EGR tries to stay in the game by answering with a double-triple-groundout RBI stretch in the bottom of the inning to get back to 6-4.The EGR bullpen implosion continues in the 8th, however, with Betances and Hand giving up 2 more, and Hand yielding a Rizzo SF in the 9th after a Blackmon triple.A meaningless Santana Hr in the bottom of the 9th completes the scoring.SFO 9, EGR 5
Game 6 (Faria vs Paxton):EGR jumps out to an early lead as Albies walks, goes to 2nd on a grounder, and scores on a Sano double.SFO gets it right back and more in the bottom of the inning thanks to a 2-run Blackmon shot, but EGR ties it in the 2nd thanks to walk-WP-single-SF sequence.Things really settle down through the 6th, as SFO gets a runner on in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th, only to have them erased on double plays. The SFO breakthrough finally comes in the 7th, as Blackmon reaches on a Lyons error. With one out, Pham doubles him to 3rd off Bowman, and Parra scores them both on another double.Neshek gets us out of the inning, and pitches a perfect 8th to keep hope alive. EGR sandwiches singles around 2 Ks in the 9th, but Knebel gets Albies to strike out as well.SFO 4, EGR 2
So, can SFO complete another great comeback?Game 7 certainly had some events
Game 7 (Carrasco vs Bundy): Springer doubles in the 1st, goes to 3rd on an almost but not quite split HR roll by Fowler, and scores on a Santana groundout.Similar to game 6, SFO regains the lead quickly (here in the 2nd) on a single-walk -Powell single, and a 2-out Sogard single, but EGR ties it up thanks to an actual Fowler HR in the 3rd.SFO loads the bases in the bottom of the 3rd with one out as Blackmon singles and Rizzo and Pham walk, but Powell lines into the classic 4-5 DP.Whew.
SFO does manage to take the lead in the 5th, as Ellsbury singles with one out, steals 2nd, and goes to 3rd on a Blackmon groundout off Lyons, but Rizzo delivers a huge 2 out RBI single.EGR gets a Seager leadoff double in the 6th, but Nicasio gets Suzuki to pop up and Herrera to K before yielding to Alex Claudio.PH Tim Beckham greets him with a single but Seager is thrown out at the plate on a 70% safe chance.Still 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th, when SFO has a chance to get some breathing room as Nunez singles, steals 2nd and Blackmon walks after an Ellsbury K. Betances gets Rizzo to ground into a rally-killing DP. Double whew.
On to the top of the 8th.Sano singles off of Minor, but is forced out by Seager.Knebel comes in to face (and plunk) Suzuki and follows that with a walk to Nava to load the bases.Beckham grounds into a 3-2 force-out to set up Albies vs Knebel with 2 outs.Albies walks to score the tying run (!) and sets up Springer against Knebel.Springer walks to score the lead run (!!), before Knebel finally gets Ianetta to strike out.Can the EGR pen hold the lead?
Bottom of the 8th.With one out, PH Nick Williams laces a triple off Hand.Elias Diaz comes in as another PH, and he lines into a 5-3 DP.Triple whew.EGR gets 1 and 2 out singles in the top of the 9th, but Nava cant deliver the badly needed insurance hit.Can the EGR pen continue to hold the lead.
Bottom of the 9th.Bowman relieves Hand thanks to his nice low HR numbers, so he promptly yields a homer to lead-off hitter Trevor Story (!!!) before retiring the side in order. On to extra innings.
EGR goes 1-2-3 in the 10th, and SFO gets a one-out hit in the bottom to tire Bowman, but Neris comes in to get 2 fly outs.Ianetta cranks a leadoff homer off his card (as JC Ramirez has none on his) in the top of the 11th, and after a Santana single and 2 outs, Kurt Suzuki (down to 2 plate appearances for the series) hits one of his own.Neris headhunts Story in the bottom of the 11th, but that is the only runner he allows.EGR 7, SFO 4 (11)
So, I get to face another Travis team, and Rick has a great comeback very narrowly spoiled thanks to a few enormously important double plays and a Knebel meltdown.Im sure it must be annoying as hell not to get to play in the WS, but congrats to Rick on getting 2 different teams this far. Its a crapshoot enough getting one to this point.
Yes, San Francisco could not overcome the multiple double-plays with the bases loaded (several times), or simply failing to score a runner from 3rd with less than two outs. Way too many missed opportunities in crucial situations, and that is deadly against a strong team like Mike's Witchfinders. If I see another roll of "Lineout Max", it will be way to soon! And by the way, Corey Knebel, you are dead to me! Throw a strike, meat!!!
Good luck in the World Series Mike, it should be a good one with significant historical significance as Travis attempts to end the drought. Despite losing, it was a good, competitive, fun series to play.
