This year, there was a tie for a division title, which resulted in a mini-three game series. While this was a lot of fun to play (seriously, I had a blast even though I lost), I'm not sure it is worth the extra delay in getting the playoffs set and underway, particularly where the loser is not eliminated. Plus: it looks like the rules need updating anyway to reflect the extra wildcard team.
Proposal:
Current language:
Four teams from each league will qualify for the playoffs: the 3 division winners plus the second place team with the best overall record (the Wild Card team). In cases of tie, there will be a 3-game playoff with the Home Team determined by coin flip. All players will be eligible for this game.
Proposed Language:
Five teams from each league will qualify for the playoffs: the 3 division winners plus the two teams with the best overall record (the Wild Card teams). In cases of a tie for divisions, the winner will be decided as follows: head-to-head record; record within the division; one-game playoff. In cases of ties for the last wildcard spot, the winner will be decided as follows: head-to-head record; one game playoff. Any one-game playoff shall be considered a "163rd" game and regular season usage restrictions apply.
I think a five-team playoff for each league would almost result in what happened this year where only two teams play and the rest are sitting on a bye. Please let me know if I am not understanding the proposed playoff structure of a five-team playoff in each league.
Currently we have five teams in each league making the playoffs -- three division leaders and two wildcard teams -- right? ("Playoff Format - The two teams with the best record that did not win a division will face off in a three-game playoff. The home team for all three games of the series will be the team with the best record. There will be no days off during the Wild Card Series. The winner of the Wild Card Series will be the official Wild Card team and will advance to the Division Series."
The rules on the webpage have a section that still speaks of "four" teams in the playoffs -- I assume that is residual langauge and that at somepoint the playoffs were expanded. We should contact the League Historian.
