The Surprise Zombies assembled a wacky collection of veterans and enjoyed a very successful 2021 season. We'll find out on Sunday whether that will come to an end in the FL Wild Card game against the mighty Hollywoo Horsemen.
Looking ahead to the 2022 season, almost all those veterans turned into moldy pumpkins, so Surprise will refocus on rebuilding. The pitching actually looks decent despite almost everyone suffering either injury or the insult of being Patrick Corbin. However, their offense is so abysmal that it's not worth trying to salvage this season. Let the kids play!
Therefore, all useful veterans are available, although I'm unlikely to move relatively young and affordable SP like Rodon, Lopez, and Montgomery. The biggest available prize is veteran SP Chris Bassitt, who had another excellent season other than getting hit by a batted ball. On the plus side, missing those starts kept him from going A, so he's only a B4 for 2022. They also have some useful veteran relievers like Kyle Finnegan, Austin Adams, Tony Watson, and Noe Ramirez. Sadly, almost all their veteran batters are headed for CFA auction or oblivion. The best trade bait from that group are Jesus Aguilar and Mark Canha, who I'm not expecting to be in high demand.
Surprise is interested in adding more young talent, particularly hitters who have reached the majors. However, I will also consider rolling the dice on picks and prospects. Bring on the fabulous offers!
