top pick-  Cory Sullivan CF Col carded   1st rd   6th overall

draft- R Helling card, P Walker card, D Rams HS, V Worley LBst, M Perez Cin, R Pascial Mil, J Smoker HS, N Scmidt Ark, J Place HS, J Guiterrez Hou, J Brigham HS, J Wells SD, E Hosmer HS, B Brownlie Chn, C Hunter HS

player profile- Sullivan is a 4th OF type who got regular playing time because Col was fielding a AAA team in 05. He has plus range and hit a Coors inflated .290 with no power.

assesment- Sullivan is not a top round talent. Cmd may catch lighting with one of the many late rd picks but I would be surprised if more than 2 of these players are on the roster 2 years from now.

Grade:   D-

top pick- Edison Volquez RP Tex  1st rd  8th overall

draft- D Betances HS, J Whittleman Tex, C Mason TB, CJ Wilson card, F German card, J Horton UNC, J Santana card

player profile- Volquez is my top rated pitching prospect available in this draft. He is a top of the rotation pitcher who should be in Arlington by mid season.

assesment- In addition to Volquez, I really like Whittleman and Betances is one of the top rated hs players.

grade:  B-

top picks- Colby Rasmus Stl RF       1st rd  7th overall     Robinson Tejada RP Phi carded   1st rd 16th overall

draft- R Hill Chn, J Owens Cha, L Rodriguez card, A Ciriaco Det, J Lansford Oak, K Clemens Hou, E Fruto Sea, S Komine oak, D Winfree Min

player profile- Rasmus was the Cards top pick and is the best all around player in their system. He projects as a 5 tool RF.

assesment- This could have been an outstanding draft if Mon hadn't wasted a #1 on Tejada. Anyway, I think Hill, Owens, Lansford and Clemens are keepers with a lot of potential.

Grade:   B

top pick- Josh Johnson Fla RP   1st rd   16th overall

draft- B Morrow Cal, M Montero Arz, J Tata Det, J Wall LA, J Repko card, B Mills FRst, V Hope Atl, M Saunders Sea, B Allen Cha

player profile-  Johnson is one of the top rated pitchers in Fla's loaded minor league system. He should establish himself in the rotation this season. He features a plus fastball and good command, but he needs to miss more bats with his kind of stuff.

assesment- Pbg must have fired it's draft director from previous seasons because there are no foreigners here and only 1 tiger prospect. This is a solid draft as Johnson will be a decent if not better sp plus Morrow, Montero and Tata will all be big league players.

grade:   B

top pick Jose Tabata NYA CF    1st rd   5th overall

draft- J Walden HS, C Tillman HS, R Valido Cha, H Conger Hs, C Rodriguez HS, M Broad HS, S Doolittle UVA

player profile-Tabata was the best prospect available. He will be the 1st home grown yankee superstar since Jeter. He has it all power, speed and defense. Expect him to appear on broadway some time in 08 and the show will last in the Bronx for at least 10 years. I can't believe he lasted to the 5th pick.

assesment- Pet gets the top prospect (Tabata) and the top HS prospect (Walden). Throw in Valido and the other top HS prospects and this becomes the top draft for any team without 6 1st rd picks. Don you are the DRAFT GOD.

Grade:  A-

ELY - assesment: Wood was an excellent pick up and Havens is one of the top college freshmen. The rest are HS players who I discount until they play against higher competition.

BUDA - I really like Flores but the rest of the draft is very hard to evaluate due to all the hs players. I will subtract a level for drafting an 8th grader.

Let's see if I understand this rationale.  Petty gets credit for HS players but Buda doesn't?  Elysian gets no credit b/c their HS players haven't played against better competition.  Buda gets a level subtracted for drafting an 8th grader but Petty gets kudos for drafting a HS Frosh (Broad).

Hmmm.....just trying to understand the thought process.

I tend to give hs credit for the top couple of places. after that I discount greatly. hs lists are the most volatile with players moving up/down greatly. I don't see much different value between the 8th ranked hs player and the 30th ranked hs player. they will probably swap spots at some later date. the top ranked hs guys like walden/drabek tend to remain at the top of the list. in Pet's case a great deal of the grade comes from tabata who I ranked number 1 for the 06 draft. Tabata, in my opinion, was not only the number 1 prospect but he was far superior to the number 2 prospect. I think tabata will rise to one of the top 5 prospects in baseball before he reaches the majors.

and sometimes i'm not consistent depending on my mood when i'm writing the report.

as far as drafting 13 yo players ,that was more tongue in cheek as I would have given the same grade whether deshields was drafted or not
