This game paired two regular-season starts, Jose Quintana (20-4, 2.59) for Austin and Masahiro Tanaka (15-3, 3.21) for Sewell. Both were very good. Tanaka only allowed three hits in 5 innings, but two of them were in the second, a leadoff double by Cespedes and a 2-out RBI single by Ramos. That was the only run of the first five innings as Quintana used a double play to get out of a first and third, one out situation in the 3rd, and wasn't really threatened in the other four frames.
But in the 6th, Big Papi launched a 2-out solo homer to straight away center, which tied the game and chased Quintana. Cook came on to get the last out of the inning.
In the bottom of the frame, Sewell went to Kyle Crockett to face three consecutive lefties, and though Heyward singled, he was erased on a caught stealing.
In the bottom of the 7th, with the score still tied 1-1, Sewell decided to hand the keys to Craig Kimbrel, he of the 1.19 regular season ERA. And Ian Desmond followed up a Pence single with a 2-run homer!
Sewell went in order in the 8th. Inciarte singled off Smith in the 9th but never got past first base as Austin closed out the 3-1 win. Porcello got the win in relief, as he went 1.2 scoreless innings with only one single allowed.
Congrats to Gary- he had to beat my best reliever and he did it.
