Attended the Texas vs Rice game last night at Minute Maid. Joe Savery of Rice squared off against Kyle McCulloch of Texas. McCulloch outpitched Savery but they both looked good.
A few of the players I got to see included:
Joe Savery Rice (GDP)- Threw real hard, although no speeds were posted. He also changed speeds well. He made Drew Stubbs look bad each at bat. Savery batted twice late in the game after he finished pitching, drawing a walk and reaching on an error.
Drew Stubbs Texas (HUM)- Went 0'fer the night. He never hit the ball hard and struck out a couple times. Pitchers were getting him out down and in.
Kyle McCulloch Texas (unowned)- Outpitched Savery. Struckout 9 in 7ip. Pitched out of some jams. Threw hard. Only allowed 1 run.
Preston Clark Texas (HOU)- Texas catcher hit Savery hard twice, recording a single and a double. He also was thrown out trying to score from 1st on a double with two outs. He looked good behind the plate with a strong arm. Has typical catchers body.
Kyle Russell Texas (MAN)- Pinch hit in the bottom of the 9th, 2 out, one on. Tall, lanky LH hitter. Drove 0-1 pitch opposite field into the Crawford Boxes. It was a no doubter as soon as it left his bat. Btw, that was his first collegiate hit.
Jordan Danks Texas (HOU)- Sat out majority of game with Savery pitching. Did come on and bat one time after Savery left. Hit a hard ground ball up the middle that the pitcher snagged in self defense and threw him out.
Bradley Suttle Texas (unowned)- Freshman 3b had an up and down game. He is a tall strapping young man. In the second inning he smoked a line drive off Savery just to the right of the Crawford Boxes for a double. The ball carried all the way to the warning track on a line. Clark was thrown out trying to score. Bradley then had consecutive innings (8th and 9th) where he made errant throws to first that directly resulted in Rice runs being scored. In the bottom of the 9th he drew a one out walk and was PR for. Pinchrunner scored ahead of Russell on the GW homerun.
Also, Ken Kasperak (HAR) had good stuff, but couldn't command it very well, and then couldn't pitch out of the jam. Freshman LH Kyle Walker (unowned) from the Woodlands looked terrific. He had big breaking ball and Rice had trouble putting it into play.
It was a fun game and ended well for Texas. Cold as heck though. No heat in MM Park.
