Pitchers' Hitting Cards
Permalink

Gary noticed that the files sent out by Eric have each pitcher's individual hitting card matched to them.  Given our league rule of allowing unlimited PA for pitchers, my inclination is to rule that we undo that and allow only the basic strat pitcher-hitting cards.  To do otherwise would create quite the windfall for owners who happen to own a good-hitting pitcher (or, more likely, a pitcher who lucked into good hitting stats last season).

In future years, if we want to use individual pitcher hitting cards I think we need some sort of rule about how to handle it (eg pitchers can hit in any game in which they are pitching, plus some amount of PH appearances).  But for this year I think it's back to the basic hitting cards.

Please let me know if anyone strongly disagrees.

Thanks,

-Tom

In keeping with my veracity for disagreeing with Tom, I want to use the actual pitcher hitting cards. I will then have Fernandez to DH against lefties and Roark to DH against righties. Go look at their hitting cards. Hoping EVERYONE takes MY side on this one. Some of you may have hidden talent you didn't even realize was there.

Thought we have always used the basic strat pitcher hitting cards?

We have. Eric just created the league using the pitcher hitting cards in error this year.  The 2011 season was the first year that the actual pitcher cards were available and we have not used them either of the last two years. He probably had one of these Babe Ruthian pitcher cards on one of his teams and hoped to get the league started before we figured out. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. I got one against lefties, and another one that is a  .300 hitter on both sides so I'm hoping we keep it. Keep it, keep it, keep it!!!!

Okay Gary, 3 things.

1) Thanks for catching this error!  This can (and will) be easily fixed by unchecking a box that is now checked.  Then the leagues will go back to the standard 1-8 pitcher hitting cards, which presumably will be used very rarely.  After all, this is a DH league.

2) No thanks for pretending that you think using these insane pitcher hitting cards is a good idea or something that you expected to happen.  It could be fun to use some of them, but much less fun when they hit against you!  Most importantly, using that option would drastically change the value of pitchers who have those great hitting cards, which wouldn't be fair at all now that rosters have been set without considering that factor.

3) No thanks for accusing me of doing this to benefit my teams, even though I know you're not serious.  It turns out that Greinke does have a great hitting card, but that's not why I got him!

Unless Strat changes how they track/display pitcher hitting, we'll almost certainly need to stay away from that "use actual pitcher hitting cards" option.  The team stats have a line for All Pitchers, but not individual ones.  So we could put a cap on total pitcher PA, but not effectively manage the usage of individual pitcher hitting.  We also can't choose to use only pitcher hitting cards that are based on a semi-reasonable # of PA, so some guy who went 1-1 or 2-2 could have a ridiculously dominant hitting card.  Zach Duke is a good 2-2 example who would almost certainly have a job in ARBA if we were going to use that hitting card!

Sorry about that, but we've all learned something from the experience, right?
