Those who missed out on the Greinke Sweepstakes should consider Cole Hamels as a consolation prize. Despite another good season (33 GS, 3.60 ERA), a trade would bring his contract down to a B8. He's only 29 and this was actually his worst season since 2009. He has a 3.38 career ERA and has remained remarkably healthy.
Unfortunately, Shiner's team is falling apart after a great run, so I have to consider moving him now. However, if he's not traded I'll probably follow Aaron's lead with Greinke and retain Hamels on another A instead of throwing him into the C auction.
One advantage to the team's implosion is that they can fit in quality talent almost anywhere. I should also note that elite closer Grant Balfour is still available. So are a bunch of other guys, but those are their two biggest prizes. I've obviously paid far more attention to SUR than SHI, partly because they're kind of depressing right now. However, there's still time left before the trade deadline, so we shall see...
